There are three types of addresses in networking :

  1. Port Address/Port Number
  2. Physical Address/MAC Address
  3. Logical Address/IP Address

Port Address/Port Number :

Port numbers are the special identification number of services. There are total 65535 ports available.

  • Ports from 1 to 1023 are known as well known ports, predefined ports, fixed ports or destination ports.
  • Ports from 1024 to 65535 are known as source ports.

Physical Address/MAC Address :

It is a globally Unique Identification number of a device. It cannot be changed, remove, or modify. It is designed by IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers). The size of a Mac (Media Access Control) address is is 48 bits and it is a hexadecimal number of 12 digits and it is also known as burnt in address.

Logical Address/IP Address :

A logical address is a a Unique Identification number of a device in a particular network. It can be changed, modify or reconfigure from a device. It is designed by Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) and it is known as IP (Internet Protocol) address.
