What is a Network

The present age is popularly called the ‘Age of communications’. Everything is based on communication, Le. exchange of data and information. This exchange of data and information takes place between different types of connections of devices placed at different locations.

Networks can be between different types of devices, devices within a small area or device placed at different geographical locations. Some examples include the computer network in your school computer lab and wifi network in your home.

Usually, in a network, the connections between the computing devices are established by using either wires, cables or wireless media. Normally at home, we see devices such as smart. phones or tablets connected through Wi-Fi. All these computing devices exchange data with each other in a network.

Types Of Network

Local Area Network (LAN) is a computer ”Efwork in a relatively short distance. Sometimes LAN spans a group of nearby buildings. This network is owned, controlled, and managed by a single person or organization. LAN facilitates the users to share sources among themselves, but not with outsiders. Examples: Computer network in offices and computer labs, PAN, WLAN, etc.

Personal Area Network (PAN) is a computer network of a person at a place. PAN a person to connect to all the computers, phones, peripheral devices, video game consoles and other personal devices at his/ .‘her home.

Example: Wi-Fi at home, wearable devices like Fitbit, etc.

Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) is a network that facilitates users to move around within a larger coverage area, such as a home or small office while maintaining; network connection but still be wirelessly connected to the network.

Metropolitan Area Network (MAN) is a computer network that spans an area larger than a LAN but smaller than a WAN, such as a city. A MAN is typically owned and operated by a single entity such as a government body or large corporation, for example, a CAN.
